Philosophical considerations: why does God allow evil?

But let’s now turn to the philosophical challenges that are raised by the evil that seems to attend the evolutionary process. The phrase ‘the problem of evil’ is ordinarily taken to refer to one or another argument that reasons from the existence of evil to a conclusion that there is no God. The most widely discussed and defended version of that argument in contemporary philosophy can be stated as follows:

There exist instances of intense suffering which an omnipotent, omniscient being could have prevented without thereby losing some greater good or permitting some equally bad or worse evil.

An omniscient, wholly good being would prevent the occurrence of any intense suffering it could, unless it could not do so without thereby losing some greater good or permitting some equally bad or worse evil.

There does not exist an omnipotent, omniscient, wholly good being.
